Grade 5 Life Systems

Explain the digestive and nervous systems of primates and what are the similarities and differences are between non-human primates and humans.   Show how different digestive system evolved depending on what primates eat (leaf eaters have a more complex system, similar to cows, compared to fruit eaters).  Talk about the brain and how the primate brain is the most complex and largest (brain:body ratio) of all mammals.  How has our large brain changed our skull shape, using our collection of hominid and ape skulls to show differences between apes and ourselves.    Worksheet on identifying the main parts of the digestive system

Curriculum points covered

Human Organ Systems:
The digestive system in humans is described with diagrams and students are given a worksheet to label the various parts (mouth, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, appendix and rectum).  The parts of the nervous system are described (brain, spinal cord, nerves)

Key concepts/words:

Digestive system, nervous system, organ systems work together, nutrients, appendicitis
